Role of Parents in Strengthening values

ROLE OF PARENTS IN STRENGTHENING VALUES

"The mind, irrespective of whether one is awake or asleep, travels to far distant corners; this far distat moving mind is the light of lights. may that mind of mine be filled with Goodwill".

According to Jules Henry in " Culture against Man" (1963), values are something that we consider good such as love, kindness, quietness, contentment fun, honesty, decency, relaxation and simplicity.

According to Carl Rogers in "Freedom to Learn" (1969, value is the tendency of a person to show preference.

Family is the first school where good habits and values are nurtured in a child. The foundation laid in the formative years of a child play a significant role in determining the personality of a child and making him a good citizen. It is in the family where a child learns different values, such as love , living together, tolerance, respecting elders, obedience, discipline, sincerity, kindness, etc. Therefore, parents must also volunteer themselves to initiate such efforts that could contribute to the process of inculcating values in society. The parents may do the following to inculcate values in children:

1. ove the child to inculcate the feeling of love. 2. sk the child to share things with others. 3. Promote the value of living together through plays. 4. Develop the feeling of kindness in a child through your actions. Tell stories that promote different values in children. 5. Develop the habits of discipline and obedience. 6. Promote honesty, sincerity and faithfulness through your actinons.

Joshi (1981) says, "Today if several youngsters deviate from the path of dignity and decorum, to a large extent is due to the lack of sober influences in their own house. They should not be seen by the children worried, disconnected and distressed. When the parents behave in an undefining manner, the youngsters whowatch them shrewdly imbibe the unhealthy tendencies and display them in their activities in larger life outside. It is unfair to blame teachers when the yuoug do not behave properly, the parents having neglected their training in their plastic period.

Parents have to exercise a very vigilant control over their children, meeting all their legitimate wants and giving them evidence of the affection by positive acts of love, not necessarily by placing too much money in their hands and impressing upon them that indiscreet behaviour will meet with a stern rebuke. It is necessary to take care about children.
